Plitvice lakes & waterfalls

At first glance, Plitvice Lakes look like a chain of beautiful turquoise lakes connected by waterfalls. But if you dig a little deeper, they're something even more fascinating. Plitvice is actually a river system that flows through a valley, and along the way, it gets "interrupted" by natural dams made of a special type of limestone called travertine (tufa barriers to be more precise). These dams aren’t built by people, they’re created by nature itself. Here’s how it works: The water in this area is full of dissolved minerals, especially calcium carbonate. As it flows over rocks, moss, and plants, those minerals start to settle and build up. Tiny organisms like mosses, algae, and bacteria help trap these minerals and form barriers. Over time, these barriers grow into natural walls that hold back water, forming lakes. These barriers are constantly forming and changing, which makes the entire system feel alive. So in simple terms, Plitvice Lakes are a living staircase of natural dams — each lake spilling into the next. It’s where biology, chemistry, and geology come together like magic to create one of nature’s most beautiful masterpieces!💚
