The Yangshan Megalithic Quarry in China

The Yangshan Megalithic Quarry, located near Nanjing, China, is home to some of the largest carved stones in the world. During the Ming Dynasty, workers began crafting three enormous stone blocks, with the largest, the Stele Base, weighing an astonishing 16,300 tons.

It is generally believed that the stones were carved using traditional tools like hammers and chisels, which were common methods for stoneworking at the time. While no advanced technology or machinery has been definitively associated with the quarry, the precision of the work and the sheer size of the stones have led to questions about the techniques used.

These stones were intended for a grand monument, but the project was abandoned, leaving scholars to wonder how the ancient builders ever planned to move such massive blocks.

The quarry remains a lasting testament to the immense capabilities and ambitions of ancient builders, hinting at knowledge that may have been lost over time.
