Antarctic Ice Shows a Surprising Rebound 🌍

A recent study has shown that the Antarctic ice sheet has gained more than 100 billion tons of mass in just one year 

🏔️. This marks a stark contrast to the previous decade when the ice sheet was losing mass and contributing to rising sea levels 🌊.

🔍 What’s happening?

Between 2021 and 2023, researchers from Tongji University in China, using satellite data from NASA’s GRACE and GRACE-FO missions, found that the ice sheet gained mass at a rate of 108 gigatons per year 🌐. This is a significant shift from the 142 gigaton loss per year that occurred between 2011 and 2020 📉.

The increase in ice mass is most noticeable in East Antarctica, particularly in regions like Wilkes Land and Queen Mary Land, where glaciers had been losing ice. These areas are now seeing more snow accumulation, helping to offset some of the losses ❄️.

🌊 Impact on sea levels

This recent increase in ice mass has led to a slight reduction in the rate of sea level rise, by about 0.3 millimeters per year 📏. While it’s a positive sign, it’s not enough to fully reverse the global trend of rising seas 🌊.

⚠️ Is this a permanent change?

While this rebound in ice mass is encouraging, scientists warn that it’s not necessarily permanent 🌡️. Ongoing threats like ocean warming and glacier instability continue to put the Antarctic ice sheet at risk. If temperatures rise further, the ice could begin to melt again ❗.
