The Kouros of Apollonas—often referred to as the Colossus of Dionysus—is a massive, unfinished marble statue lying in a hillside quarry on the Greek island of Naxos. Dating to the 6th century BC, it stretches nearly 11 meters (35 feet) long and weighs an estimated 80 tons. Thought to represent either Apollo or Dionysus, its exact identity remains uncertain, adding to its allure. The statue was abandoned where it was carved after a fault in the stone made it impossible to complete or move. Its unfinished state reveals how ancient sculptors shaped colossal figures directly from living rock, using iron and bronze tools to chip away at the marble.
