Pyramid of Cestius Rome, Italy
Built between 18 and 12 BC, the Pyramid of Cestius is one of the most unusual monuments in ancient Rome — a true Egyptian-style pyramid rising beside the city’s walls.
Commissioned as the tomb of Gaius Cestius, a wealthy Roman magistrate, the pyramid measures 29.6 meters (97 feet) on each side and reaches 37 meters (121 feet) high. It was inspired by Rome’s growing fascination with Egyptian culture after Egypt’s conquest by Augustus.
Remarkably, it still retains its original white marble casing, making it one of the best-preserved ancient structures in Rome. Its survival is thanks to a twist of history — in the 3rd century AD, the pyramid was built into the Aurelian Walls, unintentionally protecting it for nearly two thousand years.
