Sokol Fortress, Croatia.

The first surviving written mention of the fort is from 1391, although the fort or its predecessor existed earlier. It is a fortress of the Bosnian nobles (before them there was an Illyrian fortress, as well as a Roman and Byzantine fortress) that came into the possession of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1420, after the sale of Konavalo. Since then, continuous work on its extension, remodeling, strengthening, arming and maintenance began. In the area where the fort is located, there are traces of life that are 4,000 years old. It survived the great earthquake of 1667. After 1672, it is no longer mentioned in literary records, which leads to the conclusion that it was abandoned after that year. As it was usual with abandoned forts, the surrounding inhabitants used its stones to build their houses and fences and support borders, and thus completely dismantled it. What remains of the fort has been preserved and is continuously maintained. In April 2013, the fort was completely renovated by the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquity (which bought it from the Church that owned the fort in 1970), and became accessible to visitors for a fee. In the first 9 months of 2013, 5,800 visitors visited Sokol town.
