The Château de Pailhès France 🇫🇷

The Pailhès Castle is a medieval castle that dominates the village of Pailhès from the top of its rocky promontory. After Foix, Pailhès Castle is one of the oldest still in good condition. It is a fine example of medieval military architecture with its access through a gate topped with a murder hole and its medieval cistern in the center of the courtyard. Its medieval base dating from the 12th century was remodeled and completed by work in the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. These various modifications gave Pailhès Castle a unique and fanciful appearance that was disrupted by an enormous 18th century construction. The accommodation built in the 14th century is flanked by a turret containing a wooden spiral staircase. The guard room retains traces of graffiti supposedly from the 16th century and a room in the castle is said to have housed the future Henry IV. It belonged to the Amiel family from the 11th century, then to the Villemur family until 1762. The castle then passed to the La Fage de Pailhès family until 2006. The castle is private property.
