The Menhir de Champ-Dolent stands near Dol-de-Bretagne in Brittany, France, and at about 9.5 meters tall (31 feet), it’s one of the tallest standing stones in Europe. Archaeologists agree it was deliberately erected during the Neolithic period, roughly between 5000 and 4000 BC. The stone itself is granite, and while its exact quarry source is still debated, it did not naturally form in its current upright position, meaning it was intentionally transported and raised by prehistoric people using unknown methods. No inscriptions or carvings explain why it was placed there, and no records exist from its builders, leaving its original purpose and the logistics behind moving such a massive stone unanswered.
