The subterranean city of Naours, situated in the Picardy region of France, is an extraordinary labyrinth of tunnels and chambers that dates back to the Middle Ages. Known locally as ❝Les Souterrains,❞ this vast underground complex was originally constructed as a sanctuary for residents during times of strife, including the Norman invasions and various religious conflicts. Although its primary function was to provide safety, many aspects of its creation and architectural style remain shrouded in mystery. Stretching nearly 3 kilometers, Naours contains approximately 300 distinct rooms—such as chapels, stables, and living quarters—linked by intricate corridors and equipped with cleverly designed ventilation shafts. Centuries later, during World War I, this concealed city once again became a haven, this time for Allied troops. The soldiers left behind a legacy of inscriptions and graffiti on the walls, which continue to narrate their experiences to this day.
