The Tower of Jericho

The Tower of Jericho

The Tower of Jericho is an 8.5-meter-tall conical stone structure located at Tell es-Sultan in the city of Jericho in the West Bank, recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built around 8000 BC during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A period by the Sultanian culture, it is one of the earliest known stone towers, buildings, and examples of monumental architecture in human history. The tower features thick walls, an internal staircase with 22 steps, and is estimated to have required about 11,000 working days to construct. It was first excavated in the 1930s by John Garstang, who initially misdated it, and fully uncovered in the 1950s by Kathleen Kenyon, confirming its Neolithic origins. While its exact purpose remains debated, theories suggest it served astronomical functions, such as aligning with summer solstice shadows from nearby mountains, and social roles, like fostering community cohesion amid the rise of agriculture, rather than defense or as a tomb.
