High in the cliffs near Çorum, northern Turkey, sits the Kapilikaya Rock Tomb — a 2nd-century BC monument carved during a time of Greek influence in the region. ⛏️ The tomb was built for someone of importance — perhaps a military leader or regional official — yet almost nothing is known about who they were. The only clue is a single word inscribed above the entrance: IKEZIOS. Its design is modest but deeply symbolic. A door-shaped facade marks the entrance — a gateway between the living and the dead — while small niches cut into the chamber walls once held offerings or personal belongings meant to accompany the deceased into the afterlife. Why this exact cliffside was chosen, or what treasures it once held, remains uncertain.
