Namibia’s Matterhorn of the Desert

Spitzkoppe: Namibia’s Matterhorn of the Desert Rising dramatically from the flat plains of the Namib Desert, Spitzkoppe is one of Namibia’s most iconic natural landmarks. Often called the Matterhorn of Namibia because of its sharp peak and striking silhouette, Spitzkoppe is not a single mountain, but a group of bald granite peaks that have captured the imagination of adventurers, geologists, and photographers for centuries. Interesting Facts: Age: The granite that forms Spitzkoppe is estimated to be more than 700 million years old, making it some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth. Height: The highest peak stands at about 1,728 meters (5,669 feet) above sea level — about 700 meters above the surrounding desert floor. Name: "Spitzkoppe" is German for "pointed dome," a name given during Namibia’s period as a German colony (1884–1915). Archaeological Treasures: The area is rich in San (Bushman) rock art, some believed to be over 2,000 years old. These paintings offer a glimpse into the lives and spiritual world of Namibia’s first inhabitants. Climbers’ Paradise: Spitzkoppe is famous among rock climbers worldwide, offering everything from gentle scrambles to serious multi-pitch climbing routes. Natural Arches: One of the most photographed spots is the Spitzkoppe Arch, a giant rock bridge that frames the desert landscape perfectly at sunrise and sunset.
