Castello di Montegiove Italy

Castello di Montegiove Italy

Montegiove Castle is a fortified building dating back to the 13th century, built around 1280. The castle was built by the Bulgarelli family, Counts of Marsciano, during the 13th century on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Iuppiter Elicius (Jupiter), from which the name Montegiove derives. The exact year in which the castle was founded is uncertain, although it certainly existed in 1282, as evidenced by some documents that show that in that year a request was issued for the construction of an oratory within the estate of the Monte Giove Castle, which was later granted and today that site is known by the name "La Scarzuola". The ownership of the castle changed over the centuries between battles and feuds, since 1780 it has been owned by the Marchesi Misciattelli family. The castle was the birthplace of Blessed Angelina di Marsciano, of the Monaldeschi della Vipera family (Montegiove 1357- Foligno 1435), an Italian nun who founded the Third Regular Order of Saint Francis and was also one of the homes of the famous leader Gattamelata.
